The Owners
Sarah and Troy Mayfield didn’t know that a hobby of furniture-hunting would evolve into a business. “We always enjoyed the hunt,” says Sarah. About a year ago, however, the couple toyed with the idea of starting a store filled with repurposed items that Troy refinished. His background in cabinet-making and furniture-refinishing, both on his own and for Nathan Taylor at Obelisk Home, made him perfect for the job. He reclaimed a few pieces to see what would happen, and the couple opened up shop to an overwhelming response. “We were kind of blown away,” says Sarah.
The Setting
Walking into Saturday Morning is like going home, even if it’s not to your own address. The store contains several spaces set up as the rooms of your house. There are pictures on the wall, lamps and dining room sets and pieces for a bedroom.
It’s hard to get bored in Saturday Morning, since the inventory changes so often. “We try to bring stuff in every week and make it different,” says Sarah. If you want to visit the store, all you have to do is head out south on Campbell Avenue. Turn right on Weaver Road, and Saturday Morning is located just down the road on the left.
The Stuff for Sale
Saturday Morning contains a little bit of everything. There are dressers, buffets, end tables, dining room tables, television stands and night stands. But many things in the store didn’t start out the way they’re being sold. “He’s always seeing past what it is,” says Sarah, who points to buffets that can also serve as stands for flat screen televisions. There are old sewing cabinets that are now bedside tables, and even beds that have been transformed into benches. Troy and Sarah look everywhere to find the items they sell in the store, including estate sales, auctions and on Craigslist. “As soon as you see a piece, you know,” says Sarah.
After an item is found, Troy transforms it. “A little bit of paint goes a long way,” says Troy. That paint isn’t limited to neutral colors. There are pinks, blues and reds in addition to creams, beiges, browns and blacks. Those colors not only change the furniture’s obvious visual appeal. “It brings it all back to life,” says Sarah. In the mood to accessorize? There are many options for that as well, including refurbished lamps, wall art and even vintage record albums.
The Summary
If you’re looking for a great new piece that’s different from everything else out there, Saturday Morning is the perfect place to look. There are great large pieces, smaller quick-change items and accessories, all at very reasonable prices.
