When Anita and Brad Oplotnik originally designed their custom-built home in 1994, the couple didn’t have any children. Today, they share the same house with their four kids, 10-year-old twins David and Darin, 14-year-old Kelli and 17-year-old Kristen.
For the most part, the family has grown into the house quite nicely. But not where the kitchen is concerned. The room was too small for the Oplotnik family, and it didn’t have adequate pantry space. And the room’s décor was also outdated. When the house was built 18 years ago, it had what Anita describes as a country style, and the kitchen featured oak cabinetry and trim and even flowered wallpaper. All these factors led the Oplotniks to start planning a remodel. “I wanted it to be a more open space,” Anita says of her kitchen. And she also wanted an updated look and a pantry with more storage.
Thanks to their partnership with the 417 Home Dream Remodel Series: Kitchen Edition, the Oplotniks were able to work with a team of experts to create the kitchen of their dreams. Chad Holgerson of Keystone Building and Design, LLC led the project, and he worked closely with the couple in a design-build process. Holgerson created several design options for the couple, and the three reviewed work and customized plans throughout the entire process. “Chad was really great about working with us and customizing things,” Anita says.
The Oplotniks also worked with a variety of other 417-land professionals on the project, including Unique Tile, The Light House Gallery, Metro Appliances & More, Pella Window and Doors and Cabinet Concepts by Design. The team all worked to meet a set of master plans that included enlarging the room by 224 square feet, adding a pantry and relocating a half bath. And the project also included replacing vinyl flooring with tile, removing and reconfiguring walls and cabinetry, raising the ceiling, adding two islands and adding a new backsplash. The finished product is something that’s loved by the homeowners. “It’s perfect,” Anita says. “It’s exactly what we were looking for.”

Gorgeous Granite

The kitchen features two granites, Metallica Granite and Santa Cecilia Amber, both from Unique Tile. “I love all the granite countertops,” Anita says. “They look way better, and they’re so much easier to clean.” And in addition to the look, Anita loves the extra storage space that Chad designed into the cooktop island.

Hot Appliances

The room features a KitchenAid stainless-steel double oven and dishwasher, a Sharp microwave drawer, an Electrolux beverage center and a Wolf cooktop with a pop-up down draft system (right). The family loves all the new appliances, and they really appreciate the new microwave drawer. “It’s easier to clean and easier to reach for the kids,” Anita says. “I didn’t want a microwave over the stove or on the counter, and this was perfect. It’s technology at its best.” She also loves the double oven, especially while entertaining.

Top-Notch Kitchen

The kitchen’s custom backsplash features Unique Tile’s Vintners Reserve tile, a glazed stoneware tile, and the design is enhanced with accent stones. And Murray Feiss Heritage bronze light fixtures from The Light House Gallery help tie the main kitchen area and breakfast nook together. “It matches and coordinates well,” Anita says. In the remodel, Chad Holgerson and his team enlarged the size of the kitchen by 224 square feet, adding a pantry and relocating a half bathroom. To do this, they had to remove part of the home’s deck, but they actually built a new outdoor space. Also, Holgerson refinished the ceiling with a coffering treatment. “Doing a kitchen remodel without refinishing the ceiling is like going to prom without doing your hair,” Holgerson says. Anita loves the new open floor plan Chad created. In addition to the kitchen remodel, Keystone Building and Design also remodeled the home’s living room, hall, dining room and stairway, creating a large, well-flowing area.

The Floor With More

The kitchen features an Empire Tile 12-by-24 tile from Unique Tile. “Right now, 12-by-24 is the hot new thing,” says Melissa Turpin, president of Unique Tile. Anita says she loves the tile, as well as the way Chad arranged it to match the pattern on the ceiling. The floor also features an Andean mahogany wood inlay that matches floors in the living room, dining room and hallway, and underneath the tile is a radiant floor heating system by SunTouch.

Designer Windows & Custom Cabinetry

The kitchen features Designer Series triple-pane windows and a door from Pella Window and Doors. “They’re the most energy efficient windows on the market today,” says Shelly Hale of Pella Window and Doors. The windows and the door feature blinds between the glass, eliminating the need for exterior blinds or drapery. “I don’t have to clean them—they don’t get dusty,” Anita says. The pantry features an Architect Series awning window, also from Pella Window and Doors. And the kitchen features custom-
designed knotty alder cabinetry. “It’s a timeless style, not something that can get dated easily,” says Shelley Wehner of Cabinet Concepts by Design. Anita says she loves the new top-of-the-line cabinetry, which also features Blumotion drawer guides and soft-close doors. “I love all the pull-out doors and drawers,” she says. “I don’t have to get down on my hands and knees to find things. It makes everything much more accessible.”

Redefined Space

Chad reconfigured the kitchen space, and he was able to add a pantry and relocate a half bathroom (below). The new bathroom is a bit smaller than the previous, but the pocket door helps save space.
