Vision Landscape Design
Residence: David Wells
In 2010, David Wells called on expert landscaper Westin Yancey to give his backyard a complete makeover. Wells was more than happy with the results, so he called Yancey back in Fall 2012 with a new project: rejuvenating and upgrading the landscaping in the front of his home. “He wanted fresh beds and new soil in some areas, and he wanted to refresh other spots,” Yancey says. “We wanted to tie all of the yard together, as well as help create some structure in the space.” This project including adding new flower beds in the front of the home, as well as adding landscaping on the side of the house to tie the front and back yards together. Since Wells likes a natural look, Yancey and his team chose to use gray Arkansas flagstone to build the new flower beds. “This flagstone is large and can weigh up to 200 pounds per piece,” Yancey says. And since they didn’t want to drive on the lawn, the team had to carry all the pieces in by hand. After using the flagstone to build multiple new beds, they fi lled the new beds with fresh compost, soil and lush new plants, including azaleas and a variety of perennials. “We left space for annuals so he can add them himself every year,” Yancey says.—S.W.
Create focal points by building tree rings around your favorite trees or bushes.
Define your edges, making sure beds and other blooming areas have pre-set stopping points and are contained.
Pick flowers that fit your landscaping, being careful to plant flowers that require sun or shade in the appropriate spots.
